Lot 19 – Americas Cup x Var

Var ex Americas Cup

Var colt has plenty of upsides

Boland Stud will, once again, be offering a quality draft at this year’s Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale. The draft is made up of yearlings sired by some of South Africa’s most exciting and popular stallions, but few of Boland’s draft sports a better pedigree than the colt out of Americas Cup.

This colt is a son of red hot sire Var, South Africa’s Leading Sire of 2Yos in both 2016-2017 and 2017-2018. Var, whose 25 individual Gr.1 horses include the Adam Marcus trained Gr.1 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate winner Vardy and Equus champions Variety Club, Val De Ra and Via Africa, looks to have another high-class crop of two-year-olds this season, headed by brilliant debut winner Delta Queen and Miracle Flight –an impressive winner of her first three starts.

Var’s son in question is out of the dual winning America’s Cup, whose sire Rich Man’s Gold is broodmare sire of such outstanding Gr.1 winners as Athina, Coral Fever, Brave Mary, Louis The King and Wagner (Brave Mary, Louis The King and Wagner, like Boland’s Var colt, were all sired by Storm Cat line sires). Already the dam of three winners, including the smart El’ Zara, Americas Cup (a full-sister to the dam of the very smart Blow Me Away) is a half-sister to Gr.1 J&B Met winner Martial Eagle and to dual Algoa Cup hero Nebula.

Americas Cup is directly descended in female line from influential South African mare –who is also ancestress of such outstanding Gr.1 winners as Cherry On The Top, Classic Flag, Divine Jury, Lady Windermere, National Spirit, Royal Fantasy, Serena, and Gr.1 Sword Dancer Invitational winner Broadway Flyer. This is also the family of current high-class filly Summer Pudding, a winner of her first three starts including the Gr.3 The Citizen Fillies Mile. This colt has been bred on a similar cross to the one that produced Gr.1 winners High Yield, Purple Diamond and Sophisticat !

Eugene Freeman is impressed with this well-made colt, and says, “He is a stunning Colt.”
