Lot 218 – Romantic Moon x What A Winter

Lunar’s half-sister to shine at national sale

Boland Stud will be offering a top class draft at the upcoming National Yearling Sale, and one of the very best yearlings the farm will be offering is the half-sister (Lot 218) to the very smart Lunar Rush. The latter, a Duncan Howells trained daughter of Windrush, won five times and earned nearly R1 000 000 during a career which saw Lunar Rush down a high-class field to win the KZN Yearling Sale Million.

Boland Stud, as agent, will be offering a What A Winter half-sister to Lunar Rush, with the pair produced by high-class sprinter Romantic Moon. The latter, a very speedy daughter of five times South African champion sire Silvano, won eight times during her career, with Romantic Moon winning from 1100m to 1200m and finishing third in the Gr.3 Poinsettia Stakes. Romantic Moon, who is bred on the same Silvano/National Assembly cross as Gr.1 winners Happy Valentine and Vercingetorix, hails from a speedy background, with her dual winning National Assembly sired dam Racing Heart a half-sister to two stakes winners including Gr.1 Mercury Sprint winner All Will Be Well.

Champion Sprinter – Russet Air (by What A Winter)

Racing Heart’s third dam Prayer Bell is best known as the dam of US Champion 2YO, and Silent Screen, and this is also the family of triple Gr.1 winner, and outstanding stallion, Medaglia D’Oro. What A Winter, South Africa’s Champion Sprinter of 2011-2012 and 2012-2013, has been a prolific source of speed and precocity since retiring to stud. The triple Equus Champion, and South Africa’s Leading First Season Sire of 2016-2017, is already responsible for nearly 30 black type horses, including champion sprinter Russet Air and fellow Gr.1 winners Clouds Unfold and Warrior’s Rest. One of the leading sires of 2yos in South Africa today, What A Winter is also sire of such notable graded stakes winners as Armando, Dutch Philip, Magical Wonderland, Snow Report and Winter Smoke.
