Lot 23 – French Rose x What A Winter
Regally bred What A Winter filly looks a smashing prospect
Boland Stud will be offering a tremendous draft of yearlings at this year’s National Yearling Sale. The Ceres farm’s draft includes yearlings sired by some of South Africa’s best stallions of recent years including Dynasty, Gimmethegreenlight, Master Of My Fate, Querari, Silvano, Var, and the increasingly successful What A Winter. The latter, a four time Gr.1 winner and South Africa’s Champion Sprinter of both 2011-2012 and 2012-2013, has made an explosive start to his stud career.
South Africa’s Leading First Season Sire of 2016-2017, and the country’s Leading Sire of 2YOs in 2019-2020, What A Winter is already the sire of nearly 30 black type horses, with his star performers headed by Equus Champion, and Gr.1 Cape Flying Championship winner, Russet Air, dual Gr.1 Bidvest Majorca Stakes winner Clouds Unfold, and Gr.1 Tsogo Sun Sprint king Warrior’s Rest. What A Winter also has some very promising 2yos representing him this season, including Gr.3 Kenilworth Fillies Nursery runner up Winter Mosaic and Cold Fact -an impressive winner of her first two starts. What A Winter has a very well bred daughter on offer at the National Sale this year in the form of Miss Cool (Lot 23).
Miss Cool is out of French Rose, a half-sister to Horse Of The Year, and four time Gr.1 winner Futura. A triple Equus Champion, who earned over R4.337 million in stakes, Futura won all of the Gr.1 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate, Gr.1 J&B Met and back to back running of the Gr.1 Champions Cup during his illustrious career. Futura has established himself as one of South Africa’s most exciting young stallions, with his first crop having already unleased such stakes winners as Nourbese, Dindingwe and Sweet Future. Further back, this is also the family of Gr.1 Paddock Stakes winner Angelina and dual Gr.1 winning champion Aslan.
Intriguingly Miss Cool is inbred to What A Winter’s sire Western Winter, with her third dam, Gr.3 SA Fillies Nursery runner up Winter Fox, a daughter of the late Western Winter. One of the finest stallions to stand in South Africa in recent times, Western Winter was champion sire on three occasions, and leading sire of 2yos a further three times. A son of the breed shaping sire Gone West, Western Winter left behind over 160 black type horses, including champions Winter Solstice, Yard-Arm, Argonaut, Bad Girl Runs, Capetown Noir, Fearless, Ice Cube and What A Winter.
