Lot 288 – French Rose x Var
Miss Cool sibling to ignite at national sale
Boland Stud will be offering an exceptionally well bred Var colt at the 2023 National Yearling Sale. The colt in question is not only a half-brother to a multiple graded stakes winner but also hails from an exceptional female line, and he has the look of eagles about him! He is a half-brother to this season’s classy three-year-old filly Miss Cool, winner of the Gr.2 Heineken SA Nursery at two (where she beat subsequent Gr.2 Jonsson Workwear Dingaans winner Union Square into second place) and the Gr.3 Three Troikas Stakes at three. To date, Miss Cool has earned more than R550 000 in stakes with the promise of more to come.
She is out of the lightly raced mare French Rose, herself a half-sister to champion and successful sire Futura. South Africa’s Horse Of The Year, Champion Older Male and Champion Middle Distance Horse of 2014-2015, Futura won nine of 18 starts including two runnings of the Gr.1 Champions Cup, and both the Gr.1 J&B Met and Gr.1 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate. Now standing at Drakenstein Stud, Futura has made a big impression as a sire, with the champion already responsible for such graded stakes winners as Nourbese, Pink Tourmaline, Warrior, Vihaan’s Pie and Rockpool. The latter stamped himself as one of the most exciting gallopers in training when running out a smart winner of the Gr.3 Politician Stakes this season, and Rockpool looks a very exciting prospect for the season ahead.Futura and French Rose are out of the winning mare Scribblin’ The Cat, herself a daughter of Gr.3 SA Fillies Nursery runner up Winter Fox. The latter has certainly made her mark on the South African turf, with Winter Fox also granddam of Gr.3 Champagne Stakes winner Major Attraction, Grand Heritage winner Forest Fox, and Listed Secretariat Stakes runner up Whafeef. Var, the sire of the colt in question, has sired some exceptional performers, with his star male flagbearers headed by dual Horse Of The Year Variety Club, fellow champion Vardy, and Gr.1 winning speedballs Contador, Normanz, Rivarine, and Villandry. At the time of writing, Var (twice Leading Sire of 2YOs in South Africa) had been responsible for 12 Gr.1 winners and a further 16 Gr.1 placed gallopers.
