Lot 348 – Queen Of Spain x William Longsword

Mastercraftsman relative has a stallion’s pedigree

Few, if any, yearlings on this year’s Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale sport a stronger female line than the William Longsword colt offered by Boland Stud.

The colt in question is out of the smart, winning Holy Roman Emperor mare Queen Of Spain, who made R2 600 000 when selling at the CTS Breeding Stock Sale back in 2018. Queen Of Spain, also closely related to Gr.1 Moyglare Stud Stakes runner up Famous and Gr.3 Locust Grove Handicap heroine Genuine Devotion is a three-parts sister to none other than the Coolmore Stud based four time Gr.1 winner Mastercraftsman. The latter, victorious in the 2009 Gr.1 Irish 2000 Guineas, has become a hugely influential stallion with his 60 plus stakes winners (this tally includes 14 Gr.1 winners) headed by Cartier champion Alpha Centauri and classic winners Kingston Hill and The Grey Gatsby.

Queen Of Spain, who traces back in female line to Irish champion Lady Kells, is from a truly sensational female line. Her dam Starlight Dreams is a half-sister to a stakes winner, as well as to the dam of Italian and German champion Pressing, and Queen Of Spain’s second dam is a half-sister to the Gr.2 Ribblesdale Stakes winning dam of Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner Sakhee. Further back, this is also the family of leading US sires Broad Brush and Capote, as well as Kentucky Oaks winner Hidden Talent, and multiple Gr.1 winner Exceller.

William Longsword, the sire of the colt in question, was an exceptional racehorse whose six wins, from just eight starts, included both the Gr.1 Cape Guineas and CTS Mile. One of the very best sons of deceased champion sire Captain Al (sire of, among others, the recent Gr.1 Sun Met winner One World), and a half-brother to Gr.1 winning sprinter Real Princess, William Longsword has already made his mark in the sales ring. The magnificent bay has had yearlings from his first crop make up to R600 000 this year already, and William Longsword looks poised to become the latest South African bred stallion to succeed at stud. This colt has been bred on a similar cross to the one that produced Gr.1 winner Snowdance!

Eugene is in awe of this classy colt, saying, “He’s arrestingly beautiful with a strong, athletic frame.”
