Lot 63 – Queen’s Pageant x What A Winter

Boland Stud - Lot 63

Boland Stud – Lot 63

The legacy of the great broodmare Queen Of Light continues to be felt all over the world.

Winner of the prestigious (now G1) Falmouth Stakes and two other races, Queen Of Light was a daughter of Coronation Cup winner Borealis and 1000 Guineas winner Picture Play, and was a direct descendant of the great Joel taproot mare Absurdity.

Queen Of Light’s daughter Crystal Palace (by Solar Slipper) emulated her dam by landing the Falmouth Stakes and also added wins in the (now G1) Nassau Stakes and New Ham Foal Stakes, before going on to a stud career which saw her produce 2000 Guineas/Derby winner Royal Palace (by Ballymoss). Royal Palace, who also won the Coronation Cup, Eclipse Stakes and King George VI and Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, before retiring to a stud career which saw him sire dual English classic winner Dunfermline.

Lawman

Crystal Palace is also second dam of the English classic winners Fairy Footsteps (1000 Guineas) and Light Cavalry (St Leger), and the fourth dam of triple G1 winning miler Desert Prince, whose victories included the Irish 2000 Guineas.

Another daughter of Queen Of Light, Picture Of Light, is the dam of top-class miler and sire/broodmare sire Welsh Pageant, while yet another daughter, Chandelier, is the dam of the top-class two-year-old and miler Crocket.

The list of classic winners tracing back to this great mare is a long one and also includes Moonshell (Epsom Oaks), Lawman (French Derby) and Latice (French Oaks). Lawman has since on to enjoy classic success as a sire, with his son Harbour Law winning the 2016 English St Leger, while Moonshell (whose own brother Doyen won the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth II Stakes) is the second dam of Australian champion and G1 Golden Slipper winner Miss Finland.

Other recent G1 winners descended from Queen Of Light include Stay With Me (VATC 1000 Guineas), Esoterique (Prix Jacques le Marois), and top-class South African galloper Captain America. Winner of the recent G1 Rising Sun Gold Challenge, Captain America has banked more than R4 million in prize money during a career which has seen him consistently ranked among the country’s best racehorses.
