Lot 77 - What A Player x Vercingetorix

Boland Stud’s Vercingetorix filly has plenty of upside!

Boland Stud will, once again, be bringing a top-class string to this year’s KZN Yearling Sale. Perhaps one of the string’s stars is the Vercingetorix filly out of the beautifully bred What A Winter mare What A Player. The latter was a smart racemare, who won over 1400 and 1600 metres, with What A Player also finishing second, beaten a short-head, in the 2018 Listed East Cape Guineas. What A Player, a three-parts sister to Gr.2 Debutante Stakes third Winter Sun, is out of Darshaan matron Shaan Madary -who is also dam of R800 000 plus earner S’il Vous Plait. The latter, who won nine times and ran third in a trio of graded races, was sired by the mighty Silvano -whose numerous high-class offspring include the aformentioned Vercingetorix!

Gr.1 Winner – Chansonette (by Vercingetorix)

Shaan Madary, herself a half-sister to the dam of Gr.2 Celebration Mile winner and promising sire Kodi Bear, was sired by champion sire and legendary broodmare sire Darshaan. The latter’s daughters produced more than 230 stakes winners including such notable Gr.1 winners as High Chaparral, Al Kazeem, Milan, Marienbard, Poui Moi and former Mike de Kock trained star Eagle Mountain. Darshaan also sired a very successful South African broodmare in the form of Alexandra Bi -who ranks as the granddam of US Gr.1 winner Oleksandra. What A Player, whose first three dams were sired by What A Winter, Darshaan and the legendary Green Desert respectively, is directly descended from the legendary broodmare Paradoxical -ancestress of numerous classic winners and champions including Humorist, Jest, Picture Play, and Royal Palace.

Paradoxical also ranks as the ancestress of La Troienne -arguably the most important thoroughbred broodmare in history! Without a doubt the hottest stallion standing at stud in South Africa at present, exceptional young sire Vercingetorix has already proved more than capable of siring top-class fillies. Among the growing number of top-class fillies sired by Vercingetorix are this season’s Gr.1 WSB Cape Fillies Guineas winner Chansonette, former G1 winning two-year-old Vernichey, and such notable stakes winners as Gallic Princess, Lyrical Dance and Seehaam. Vercingetorix daughters also found favour at the 2022 National Yearling Sale -where they made up to R1 400 000.
