Lot 80 – Dark Journey x Coup De Grace

Boland Stud to offer classy half-brother to Desolate Road at KZN Sale

Boland Stud’s power-packed KZN Yearling Sale draft this year includes a number of exceptionally well bred yearlings, and the farm is proud to be offering (as agent) a half-brother to the very classy peformer Desolate Road at the 2019 KZN Sale.

The latter rated among one of the best 2yos in KZN last season, with Desolate Road winning first time out over 1000m before going on to finish second, to Gr.1 performer Chimichuri Run, in the Gr.3 Umkhomazi Stakes. This season, the Tony Rivalland trained Desolate Road caught the eye last time out when finishing second in a pinnacle stakes over 1200m at Greyville.

Desolate Road was produced by the smart performer Dark Journey, a stakes placed winner of five, who won up to 1400m. Herself a half-sister to Settlers Trophy/Winter Oaks winner Francia and the Gr.2 performer Earth’s Orbit, Dark Journey was produced by Venturesome –a winning Rakeen half-sister to champion Hinterland.

Further back, this is the family of Horse Of The Year and numerous champion sire Foveros –one of the very best stallions ever to stand at stud in South Africa! The half-brother to the talented Desolate Road on offer, already named Khan, was sired by the very well performed Coup De Grace, whose sire Tapit ranks as one of the best stallions seen in North America in many a year.

One of the fastest members of his generation, Coup De Grace blitzed his way to five impressive victories, with the chestnut scoring comprehensive wins in both the Gr.2 Amsterdam and Gr.3 Bay Shore Stakes and he also ran third in the Gr.1 King’s Bishop Stakes.
A half-brother to Gr.1 Alcibiades Stakes winner Dancing Rags, Coup De Grace was produced by the Gr.3 placed mare Home Court –a Storm Cat daughter of US champion and Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Distaff winner Jewel Princess.

Coup De Grace is one of 120 black type winners sired by triple US champion sire Tapit, whose progeny include five Breeders’ Cup winners and three (so far!) Belmont Stakes winners. To date, Tapit’s progeny have earned over $173 000 000 in prize money! The handsome chestnut had yearlings make up to R750 000 at the 2019 Cape Premier Yearling Sale.

Khan is closely inbred to multiple champion sire Storm Cat, with this pattern having already produced such Gr.1 winners as Lady Aurelia, Nother Russia and Harmonize. This colt has been bred on a similar cross to the one that produced Gr.1 winners Sky Mesa, Rutherienne, Monomoy Girl, Hansen, Careless Jewel, Chasing Yesterday, Sweet Loretta and Tell A Kelly!
