Captain Al filly one for the notebooks!

Without doubt, one of the stars of Boland Stud’s quality National Sale draft will be the Captain Al filly (Lot 152) out of Monpazier. Former champion sire, and eight times champion sire of 2yos, the sadly deceased Captain Al has very few yearlings left to sell, and his popularity was there for all to see at the 2019 Cape Premier Yearling Sale.

Captain Al, whose 90 plus stakes winners include six Equus Champions, was the Top Sire by Aggregate at the 2019 Premier Sale, where his seven yearlings to sell made R11 200 000. Remarkably, Captain Al was responsible for Premier Sale’s top filly (R4 000 000) and colt (R2 200 000). Boland Stud have enjoyed great success with Captain Al, with the farm having bred the sire’s high class stakes winners Captain Aldo (Gr.2 Hawaii Stakes, Gr.2 Joburg Spring Challenge) and The Merry Widow (Perfect Promise Sprint, East Cape Fillies Nursery)–among others!

Their latest Captain Al yearling on sale is a filly out of the winning Silvano mare Monpazier –which makes the filly a full-sister to the Boland Stud bred Runaway Gal, who recently scored an effortless near five length win at Greyville for trainer Brett Crawford, owner Mario Ferreira and jockey Lyle Hewitson and who runs in Sunday’s G3 Umzimkhulu Stakes at Greyville. Monpazier, in turn, is a half-sister to five winners notably triple Gr.1 winner Captain America (by Captain Al) and Gr.3 Jacaranda Handicap winner Aquitaine (by Captain Al’s sire Al Mufti). Her Captain Al filly is thus very closely related to both Aquitaine and the Brett Crawford trained Captain America, who earned over R6.1 million during a career which established him as a firm fan favourite. The honest bay won or placed in a remarkable 30 of 35 races, with Captain America’s five graded wins including all of the Gr.1 Champions Cup, Gr.1 Rising Sun Gold Challenge and Gr.1 H F Oppenheimer Horse Chestnut Stakes. Monpazier is a daughter of multiple champion sire Silvano, whose 21 Gr.1 winners include brilliant recent SA Classic hero Hawwaam.

An increasingly successful broodmare sire, Silvano is already damsire of Gr.1 performers Barahin and Last Winter, and graded stakes winners Goodtime Gal, Wonderwall and Cosmic Light. Monpazier’s stakes placed five time winning second dam is a daughter of champion sire and broodmare sire Fort Wood. The Captain Al/Fort Wood cross is hugely successful and has produced not only Captain America, but Gr.1 Cape Guineas winner William Longsword, as well as such high class graded winners as Captain’s Flame, Eighth Wonder, Fragrant Al and Wheredowego. This lovely filly traces back directly in female line to 1000 Guineas winner Picture Play and even further back to great mare Absurdity, from whom numerous English classic winners are descended.

Eugene loves this regally bred filly, and says of her, “She is powerful, graceful mover with an elastic stride and a pedigree to die for! Her full sister is now a two time winner and won her last start by almost 5 lengths! She looks very special.”

This filly has been bred on a similar cross to the one that produced Gr.1 winners Captain America, Royal Fantasy, William Longsward and Our Rokkii.
