What A Winter colt looks a star in the making

Lot 100

Lot 100

What A Winter, a triple Equus Champion and four time G1 winner, was South Africa’s Leading First Crop Sire of 2016-2017 when his first runners were headed by the graded stakes winners Dutch Philip and Magical Wonderland, who, between them have earned over R5 000 000!

What A Winter, who recently was responsible for four winners on a single day, also made a great start with his second crop. This crop is headed by four time graded stakes winner Clouds Unfold (winner of, among other races, the 2019 Gr.1 Bidvest Majorca Stakes) and recent Ibhyai Stakes hero Fabian. The very classy Clouds Unfold has already banked over R1.4 million for trainer Candice Bass-Robinson and owner-breeder Drakenstein Stud. With a large and promising crop of two-year-olds having already made waves, the future looks hot for What A Winter!

Boland’s What A Winter colt (Lot 100) is out of the beautifully bred Silvano mare Hidden Silver (dam of 2 winners from just three runners), who is a winning half-sister to Gr.2 SA Fillies Nursery winner Hidden Beauty. Hidden Silver herself is bred on the same Silvano/National Assembly cross as hugely exciting sire, and former Equus Champion, Vercingetorix, as well as Team Valor owned Gr.1 winner Happy Valentine.

William Longsword

William Longsword

Hidden Silver is from an outstanding family, with her relatives including exciting young sire William Longsword, Dubai star and Gr.1 sire Victory Moon, former Dean Kannemeyer trained Gr.1 winning speedster Real Princess, and Met winning champion Imperious Sue (dam of Gr.1 Woolavington 2000 winner Imperious Star). This filly has been bred on a similar cross to the one that produced Gr.1 winner Roxanne. Boland’s Eugene Freeman is very keen on this What A Winter colt, describing him as a “beautiful, strong and athletic colt.”

Captain Al filly one for the notebooks!

Boland Stud - Lot 152

Lot 152

Without doubt, one of the stars of Boland Stud’s quality National Sale draft will be the Captain Al filly (Lot 152) out of Monpazier. Former champion sire, and eight times champion sire of 2yos, the sadly deceased Captain Al has very few yearlings left to sell, and his popularity was there for all to see at the 2019 Cape Premier Yearling Sale.

Captain Al, whose 90 plus stakes winners include six Equus Champions, was the Top Sire by Aggregate at the 2019 Premier Sale, where his seven yearlings to sell made R11 200 000. Remarkably, Captain Al was responsible for Premier Sale’s top filly (R4 000 000) and colt (R2 200 000). Boland Stud have enjoyed great success with Captain Al, with the farm having bred the sire’s high class stakes winners Captain Aldo (Gr.2 Hawaii Stakes, Gr.2 Joburg Spring Challenge) and The Merry Widow (Perfect Promise Sprint, East Cape Fillies Nursery)–among others!

Boland Stud - Lot 152Their latest Captain Al yearling on sale is a filly out of the winning Silvano mare Monpazier –which makes the filly a full-sister to the Boland Stud bred Runaway Gal, who recently scored an effortless near five length win at Greyville for trainer Brett Crawford, owner Mario Ferreira and jockey Lyle Hewitson and who runs in Sunday’s G3 Umzimkhulu Stakes at Greyville. Monpazier, in turn, is a half-sister to five winners notably triple Gr.1 winner Captain America (by Captain Al) and Gr.3 Jacaranda Handicap winner Aquitaine (by Captain Al’s sire Al Mufti). Her Captain Al filly is thus very closely related to both Aquitaine and the Brett Crawford trained Captain America, who earned over R6.1 million during a career which established him as a firm fan favourite. The honest bay won or placed in a remarkable 30 of 35 races, with Captain America’s five graded wins including all of the Gr.1 Champions Cup, Gr.1 Rising Sun Gold Challenge and Gr.1 H F Oppenheimer Horse Chestnut Stakes.

Captain America

Captain America

Monpazier is a daughter of multiple champion sire Silvano, whose 21 Gr.1 winners include brilliant recent SA Classic hero Hawwaam.

An increasingly successful broodmare sire, Silvano is already damsire of Gr.1 performers Barahin and Last Winter, and graded stakes winners Goodtime Gal, Wonderwall and Cosmic Light. Monpazier’s stakes placed five time winning second dam is a daughter of champion sire and broodmare sire Fort Wood. The Captain Al/Fort Wood cross is hugely successful and has produced not only Captain America, but Gr.1 Cape Guineas winner William Longsword, as well as such high class graded winners as Captain’s Flame, Eighth Wonder, Fragrant Al and Wheredowego. This lovely filly traces back directly in female line to 1000 Guineas winner Picture Play and even further back to great mare Absurdity, from whom numerous English classic winners are descended.

Eugene loves this regally bred filly, and says of her, “She is powerful, graceful mover with an elastic stride and a pedigree to die for! Her full sister is now a two time winner and won her last start by almost 5 lengths! She looks very special.”

This filly has been bred on a similar cross to the one that produced Gr.1 winners Captain America, Royal Fantasy, William Longsward and Our Rokkii.

Querari colt “On fire”!

Boland Stud - Lot 226

Lot 226

Among Boland Stud’s strong draft for the 2019 National Yearling Sale is a very well related colt by Querari.

The latter, a G1 winning half-brother to high class performers Quasillo and Quidura, has firmly established himself as one of South Africa’s most consistent sires of stakes performers. Querari, who had eight stakes horses in his small first crop, has already sired more 30 black type performers from his small first four crops to race.

His star performers include Gr.1 Thekwini Stakes winner Querari Falcon, millionaire Kangaroo Jack, exported Gauteng Guineas hero Monks Hood, and fellow graded stakes winners Cosmic Light, Wonderwall, Pinnacle Peak. Querari’s Sabine Plattner owned son Head Honcho currently rates as one of the better older horses in training, with the La Plaisance bred gelding having won the 2018 WSB Gr.2 Premier Trophy by 3.5 lengths before finishing a bang up third in this year’s Gr.1 Sun Met. To date, Head Honcho has earned over R1.5 million!

Boland Stud - 2019 - Sales - Lot 268 - FieldBoland’s Querari colt (Lot 226) is out of the three time winning Count Dubois mare Surefire (who won from 1200-1400m). He is thus bred on the same Querari/Count Dubois cross as top sprinter Pinnacle Peak, Gr.1 Thekwini Stakes runner up Melliflora, and Christmas Handicap second Kazaar (who earned over R500 000 in prize money).

Clearly this is a mating which works! The well-bred Surefire is a half-sister to Gr.3 Kings Cup winner Pirate’s Gold and is from the immediate family of R6 million plus earner, and triple Gr.1 winner, Captain America.

Captain America

Captain America

Further back, this is the same Queen Of Light family as major international Gr.1 winners Desert Prince (Irish 2000 Guineas), Fairy Footsteps (1000 Guineas), Light Cavalry (St Leger), Greinton (Hollywood Gold Cup), Lawman (French Derby), and Cape Blanco (Irish Derby).

Boland Stud’s Eugene Freeman has taken a strong liking to this well bred colt, and describes him as, “”He is beautifully balanced and is an absolute cracker of a colt!”.

Boland’s Coup De Grace filly looks quick!

Boland Stud - Lot 268

Lot 268

New stallion Coup De Grace, the only son of triple US champion sire Tapit at stud in South Africa, was a lightning fast horse in his own right. The flashy chestnut, a half-brother to US Gr.1 winner Dancing Rags, made a winning debut over six furlongs at Aqueduct before going on to win both the Gr.2 Amsterdam and Gr.3 Bay Shore Stakes to establish himself as one of the quickest members of his generation.

Also third in the Gr.1 King’s Bishop Stakes, the regally bred Coup De Grace is out of Home Court –a Gr.3 placed daughter of Storm Cat and US champion, and Gr.1 Breeders’ Cup Distaff winner Jewel Princess.

The chestnut has already had members of his first crop fetch up to R750 000, and Coup De Grace looks an exciting addition to the local stallion ranks.

O Caesour

O Caesour

Boland Stud’s Coup De Grace filly is out of the winning Jet Master mare Allez Afrique, already dam of a pair of winners. The well-bred Allez Afrique (bred on the same Jet Master/Al Mufti cross as Gr.1 winners Yorker and Little Miss Magic) is a half-sister to Gr.1 Cape Flying Championship winner O Caesour, and her dam is a winning daughter of outstanding broodmare sire Al Mufti.

This is also the family of champions Enchantress, Harry’s Charm, Laverna and National Currency, as well as such Gr.1 winners as Enchanting and Siren’s Call.

Boland Stud - News - 2019 - Lot 268 FieldBroodmare sire Jet Master is fast becoming an outstanding broodmare sire, with his daughters having already produced the Equus Champions Edict Of Nantes and Lady In Black, the Gr.1 winning half-brothers Rainbow Bridge (Sun Met) and Hawwaam (SA Classic), and Gr.1 Cape Fillies Guineas runner up Silvano’s Pride.

This filly has been bred on a similar cross to the one that produced Gr.1 winners Frosted, Tapizar, Laragh and Rutherienne.

Eugene Freeman is impressed with this well-made filly, and says, “She is a stunning filly, with a lot of Jet Master about her.”

There is lots to like about Boland’s Futura filly!

One of the most exciting stallions to retire to stud in South Africa recently was the brilliant Futura.
