Lot 28 – Miss Kiri x Var
Boland’s Var colt bred for success
Late flying machine Var enjoyed tremendous success at stud in South Africa, with Var making his mark as a sire of top-class racehorses, high-class broodmares and high priced yearlings and two-year-olds. Among Var’s 50 plus stakes winners are dual Horse Of The Year, and Hong Kong Gr.1 winner, Variety Club, as well as fellow Equus Champions Anything Goes, Val De Ra, Vardy and Via Africa, as well as such notable Gr.1 winners as Contador, Eden Roc, Normanz, Sommerlied and Villandry. Twice Leading Sire of 2YOs in South Africa, Var was famed for his ability to sire top-class sprinter-milers, but he also managed to produce top-class Oaks winner in the form of Princess Of Light. Var was also no stranger to making his mark in the sales rings around South Africa, with his daughter Goddess Var (subsequent named Ghaalla) fetching R5 000 000 when selling at the 2017 National Yearling Sale.

International Champion – Variety Club (by Var)
Boland Stud will be offering a beautifully bred colt by this sadly now deceased star sire at the 2022 August Two Year Old Sale. The colt (Lot 28) in question is a half-brother to six winners notably Listed Perfect Promise Sprint/Listed East Cape Fillies Nursery heroine The Merry Widow, who is fast making her mark as a broodmare. Not only is The Merry Widow dam of the very smart Danilo Danilovitch (a four time winenr who ran third in the Listed WSB Somerset 1200 at two), her son Franz Lehar caught the eye when he made a winning debut over 1000m at Hollywoodbets Scottsville. Franz Lehar had earlier caught the eye when he made R850 000 to top the 2021 CTS Ready To Run Sale.
Boland Stud’s Var colt’s five other winning siblings include the smart Hollywoodbound -who ran third in the 2021 G2 Zulu Kingdom Explorer Golden Slipper. His dam Miss Kiri, a winning daughter of champion sire Jallad, is a full-sister to Gr.1 Premier’s Champion Stakes winner Talahatchie and half-sister to the Gr.3 placed dam of Equus Champion, and Gr.1 Thekwini Stakes winner, Lady In Black, and Gr.2 Cape Racing Peninsula Handicap winner Nexus. The latter recently took his earnings to over R1 000 000 when he won the 2022 KwaZulu-Natal Breeders Mile, beating Gr.1 winning sprinter Battle Force in the process. This is also the family of Singapore Champion Liizarre.
