Lot 294 - Querari ex Monpazier

Classically bred Querari filly set to impress at National Sale

Boland Stud will be offering another excellent draft at this year’s Emperors Palace National Yearling Sale. Their classy consignment includes yearlings by some of South Africa’s most promising and popular stallions, notably the increasingly successful Querari. Querari, South Africa’s Leading Sire of 2YOs for 2018-2019, has four yearlings in Boland’s National Sale draft, including a really classy filly out of the Silvano mare Monpazier.

Captain America

Monpazier, already dam of the useful filly Runaway Gal (a smart winner on debut who contested the 2018 Gr.1 Thekwini Stakes), is a half-sister to triple Gr.1 winner Captain America, who earned over R6 000 000, and to the Gr.3 Jacaranda Handicap winner Aquitaine. The remarkable Captain America, one of the gamest and most charismatic horses of his generation, won or placed in no fewer than 11 Gr.1 races for trainer Brett Crawford, winning all of the Gr.1 Rising Sun Gold Challenge, Gr.1 H F Oppenheimer Horse Chestnut Stakes and Gr.1 Champions Cup.

Monpazier, a daughter of South Africa’s reigning champion sire, is out of Fort Wood’s Spook Express Handicap runner up Requista, and she is thus bred on the same Silvano/Fort Wood cross as July winning champion Marinaresco and Gr.1 Majorca Stakes winner Nightingale. An increasingly successful broodmare sire, Silvano is already damsire of Gr.1 performers Barahin and Last Winter, and graded stakes winners Goodtime Gal, Wonderwall and Cosmic Light Further back, this filly is a direct descendant of none other than Queen Of Light, ancestress of numerous Gr.1 winners throughout the world including the classic winners Fairy Footsteps, Desert Prince, Light Cavalry and Royal Palace.

One of 17 Gr.1 winners sired by champion sprinter Oasis Dream, Querari is already the sire of 36 stakes horses, with his standout performers including the graded stakes winners Querari Falcon, Mill Queen, Cockney Pride, Head Honcho, Kangaroo Jack, Kampala Campari, Cosmic Light, Wonderwall and exported Gauteng Guineas hero Monks Hood. Boland’s Querari filly is bred on the same Querari/Silvano cross as graded stakes winners Cosmic Light and Wonderwall, as well current high-class 3yo Luna Wish. The latter won five of her first ten starts including the 2019 Listed Lady’s Slipper Stakes.

Eugene loves this regally bred filly, and says of her, “She is powerful, graceful mover with an elastic stride and a pedigree to die for!
