Lot 36 – Balkan x Master Of My Fate

Master Of My Fate – a rising star
Boland Stud have an exceptionally high quality draft on offer at the KZN Yearling Sale this year, and one of the star lots of this imposing consignment looks to be the Master Of My Fate filly out of Balkan.
The magnificent Master Of My Fate, whose six wins from only eight starts included both the Gr.2 Peninsula Handicap and Gr.2 Premier Trophy, is firmly established as one of South Africa’s most exciting stallions. The bay made a blistering start with his very first crop headed by Gr.2 KRA Guineas hero Twist Of Fate (surely a Gr.1 winner in waiting), Kenyan superstar Silverstone Air, and Derby Trial winner Gift For The Gap.
Master Of My Fate’s second crop, looks, if anything, even better than his first, with the son of Jet Master’s early members of this crop (now two) headed by Gr.2 SA Fillies Nursery heroine Basadi Faith and the very exciting Gr.3 Godolphin Barb Stakes second Master Of Illusion. Boland Stud will be offering an exceptionally well related daughter of this top class young stallion at the KZN Yearling Sale whose dam (by outstanding broodmare sire Horse Chestnut) is a three time winning half-sister to the classy stakes performer Varuna as well as the very talented Chantyman.
Balkan, whose second dam is the Gr.2 Prix Robert Papin heroine Ocean Ridge, herself is out of the winning mare Sea Of Calm, whose Gr.1 winning sire Quiet American ranks as the damsire of such champions as Bernardini and Saint Liam. Remarkably, Balkan traces back to one of the greatest mares in the stud book – Lady Josephine, who also ranks as the ancestress of such as Nasrullah, Fair Trial, Royal Charger, Shergar, Golden Horn and Petite Etoile.
Legendary South African champion and Horse Of The Year Horse Chestnut (whose sire Fort Wood was responsible for Master Of My Fate’s stakes winning half-sister Justthewayyouare) has become an increasingly potent broodmare sire, with his daughters already responsible for the likes of Equus Champion and Met winner Smart Call, and the international Gr.1 winners Cannock Chase, Zipessa, Suggestive Boy, the brilliant full-brothers Channel Maker and Johnny Bear, and Fault. Latest star produced by a daughter of Horse Chestnut is high class filly Camphoratus (out of the Horse Chestnut mare Wild Camphor) who took her earnings to over R1 000 000 when she won the recent Gr.1 HSH Princess Charlene Empress Club Stakes, when downing, among others, reigning Horse Of The Year and multiple Gr.1 winner Oh Susanna.
This filly has been bred on a similar cross to the one that produced Gr.1 winner Thunder Dance!
