Lot 461 – Eurythmics x Querari
Boland Stud to offer Rock Opera relative at National Sale
Ceres farm, the Boland Stud, will be offering yearlings from some of the finest families in the South African stud book at this year’s National Yearling, and few fit this description better than does the Querari colt (Lot 461) out of Eurythmics.
Not only is this colt a son of one of South Africa’s hottest active stallions, but his dam Eurythmics is a full-sister to both Gr.1 Betting World Cape Flying Championship winner Gulf Storm and Gr.3 Sycamore Sprint winner Seattle Singer. A daughter of the Gone West stallion Sail From Seattle, Eurythmics also counts East Cape champion Global Drummer, a front running winner of the Listed Ibhayi Stakes recently, as a half-brother. Eurythmics’ own dam, Royal Drummer, is a four time winning half-sister to champion Rock Opera, Gr.2 The Nursery winner Hit Song (subsequently exported to Hong Kong) and Gr.1 filly Rock Concert.
The latter made a name for herself at stud, through the deeds of her top-class son Van Halen -a winner of both the Gr.1 Mercury Sprint and Gr.1 Gold Medallion. Now campaigning overseas, the Corne Spies trained Van Halen amassed earnings of R1.317 million over during his South African career. Rock Concert’s brilliant sister Rock Opera, South Africa’s Champion 2YO Filly of 2005, went unbeaten in four starts in South Africa, culminating in a two length defeat of Secret Of Victoria in the 2005 Gr.1 Allan Robertson Fillies Championship.

Rio Querari
Retired to stud overseas, Rock Opera has been a tremendous advertisement for the South African thoroughbred. The former Equus Champion is responsible for both Gr.1 Criterium International winner, and Australian sire, Royal Meeting, as well as the remarkably durable Heavy Metal -a 15 time winner whose victories include scores in the Gr.2 Godolphin Mile, Gr.2 Richmond Stakes, Gr.2 Al Maktoum Challenge Round 1, Gr.3 Burj Nahaar and Gr.3 Firebreak Stakes. Royal Meeting was sired by a son of Green Desert -who also ranks as the grandsire of Querari. South Africa’s Leading Sire of 2YOs in 2018-2019, Querari currently sire of more than 40 black type horses, including Gr.1 winning filly Querari Falcon and current top sprinter Rio Querari. One of South Africa’s most popular stallions, and a member of the powerful Green Desert male line, Querari had yearlings fetch up to R1 100 000 in 2020. This colt has been bred on a similar cross to the one that produced Gr.1 winners Cape Cross & Desert Lord!
Meavy Metal – Al Maktoum Challenge R1
Rio Querari – Khaya Stables Diadem Stakes (Grade 2)
Van Halen – Multiple Gr.1 winner
Critérium International Gruppe 1 – Royal Mrrting
