Boland’s classically bred Erupt colt set for center stage!

There have been few, if any, better bred and performed stallions to retire straight to stud in South Africa than Erupt. One of more than 50 Gr.1 winners sired by outstanding sire Dubawi (sire of top-class stallions Makfi, New Bay and Night Of Thunder), Erupt won both the Gr.1 Juddmonte Grand Prix de Paris (a race won previously by champion sire Fort Wood) and Gr.1 Pattison Canadian International during a career which saw him race in all of Britain, Canada, France, Japan and the USA.

Erupt, who is from the same family as champion sires Encosta De Lago, Flying Spur and Holy Roman Emperor, got off to a flying start at stud. To date, Erupt’s first crop, now three-year-olds, include 13 winners notably Gr.3 Storm Bird Stakes/Listed Storm Bird Stakes winner Karangetang. Remarkably, Karangetang was one of two runners to represent his sire in the 2022 Gr.2 Heineken SA Nursery, where Erupt was also represented by Set To Go -a winner of two of his first three starts.

Gr.1 Winner – Orbison

Erupt is also the sire of impressive recent Bloodstock SA Sales Cup winner Unzen and the progressive Beerenberg, and he looks a very exciting addition to the South African sire line up. Boland Stud will be offering a very well related son of this exciting young sire at the 2022 November Two Year Old Sale. The colt on sale is out of the winning mare Pretty Woman, a full-sister to Gr.1 Champions Cup winner, and Gr.1 Vodacom Durban July third place-getter, Orbison.

Pretty Woman, in turn, was produced by the Foveros sired Blue Bayou, herself a winning own sister to Gr.2 SA Oaks winner Fast Break. This is a prolific family, whose members include numerous high-class stakes winners, including graded stakes winners Mount Hood, Mr Winsome and Tarn Fairy. Another classy performer to hail from this family is the very smart sprinter Cleaver Greene, a winner of two of four starts and runner up, to subsequent Gr.1 Computaform Sprint winner Master Archie, in last season’s Gr.3 WSB Man O’War Sprint.
