William Longsword – A sire on the rise!

The Captain Al sired Cape Guineas winner William Longsword has made a cracking start to his stud career. The half-brother to Gr.1 winning sprinter Real Princess has already produced a number of high-class performers in his first crop of newly three-year-olds, with William Longsword’s early flagbearers headed by facile Gr.2 Epol Umkhomazi Stakes winner Dyce, Gr.2 Prosport International Debutante runner up Remember When, Listed 3womeninracing Sophomore Sprint second Safe Return, smart filly Bon Vivant and the highly rated Voldemort.

One of more than 100 stakes winners sired by his multiple champion sire, William Longsword’s offspring have also made a big impression in the sales ring in 2021. His yearlings made up to R550 000 at this year’s Cape Premier Yearling Sale, while William Longsword also provided the third top lot sold at the 2021 CTS Farm Yearling Sale. Boland Stud will be offering a classically bred colt by this exciting young sire at this year’s November Two Year Old Sale, with this colt bred to be anything! Out of a three time winning daughter of Dynasty (whose sire Fort Wood also ranks as the broodmare sire of William Longsword), this colt’s dam Pretty Wendy is a half-sister to Gr.1 Wilgerbosdrift SA Oaks winner, and promising producer, Pine Princess. The latter, in turn, was sired by William Longsword’s own sire Captain Al!

Pine Princess, who also captured the Gr.3 Yellowwood Handicap and was second in the Gr.1 Woolavington 2000, has made her presence felt in the sales ring. In 2020, Pine Princess’ son Pyromaniac (subsequently a winner of two of his first three starts) was knocked down to Antony Beck for R2 300 000 at that year’s National Yearling Sale. Pretty Wendy’s dam, Winter Oaks runner up Scent Of Pine, was herself a Badger Land half-sister to high-class Australian galloper and producer Spring Thaw and to the very speedy Wild Wolverine. The latter, a winner of five races including the Listed George Azzie Memorial Handicap, produced Listed Ladies Mile queen Gone Wild (dam of exported Gr.1 SA Classic winner Lobo’s Legend) as well as the Winter Oaks winning dam of last season’s top-class three-year-old Seeking The Stars. Winner of both the Gr.3 Cape Classic and Gr.3 Byerley Turk, Seeking The Stars has already earned over R950 000 in stakes! Further back, this colt traces back to Spinaway Stakes winner Sunday Evening -ancestress of top-class American racehorse and sire Medaglia D’Oro among many others.
